Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for its next original film, The Fundamentals of Caring. Directed by Rob Burnett (Late Show with David Letterman), the film stars Paul Rudd as a retired writer who takes up a job as a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. He gets assigned Trevor (Craig Roberts), a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy who has a penchant for terrorizing his caregivers. Comedy and heartfelt shenanigans ensue.

This new trailer shows off the dramedy vibe of the film, which I caught during its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read my full review here). The “Netflix Original” is a bit of a misnomer given that Netflix didn’t produce this film, they simply acquired it after it was complete, but regardless I remember thinking this would make for a perfectly fine watch within the comfort of your own home. It’s not breaking the mold and it’s certainly nothing special, but the chemistry between Rudd and Roberts is fun and Selena Gomez is surprisingly solid as a hitchhiker they pick up on their travels, making it a worthwhile—if entirely unsurprising—watch.

The film follows the story of Ben, a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with while watching the local news, including their holy grail: the World’s Deepest Pit. Along the way, they pick up a smart-mouthed runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the importance of hope and true friendship.
