What's the funniest sci-fi movie you've ever seen?
Sci-fi and comedy are a match made in heaven. Classics like?Back to the Future and more recent hits like?Everything Everywhere All at Once prove that hilarious science fiction stories can be among the best in cinema. Which is your favorite funny sci-fi movie?
Let horror icons be romantic leads!
Actors like?Bill Skarsg?rd,?Maika Monroe,?Mia Goth,?Samara Weaving, and?Jenna Ortega?have proven their talent by starring in many horror movies. However, they are also far more versatile than many people give them credit for. For example, Skarsg?rd and Monroe were delightfully charming in the horror-comedy Villains, while Goth proved her vulnerability in the 2020 Austen adaptation of?Emma. Indeed, modern icons of horror should also be allowed to be fun, quirky, hopeful, and just a little naive—in short, they should be allowed to be romantic leads. Just look how great fellow horror favorite Melissa Barrera?did in the criminally underrated?Your Monster. The people want to see their horror icons having fun and falling in love, too! What do you think? Which modern horror icon would you like to see in a rom-com?
Do you want a sequel to 'Alien: Romulus'
So, apparently?Fede ?lvarez and 20th Century are already working on another movie together in the Alien franchise — but we don't know yet if it's an actual sequel to?Alien: Romulus.?So, do you want a sequel with Rain and Andy returning? Look, I?really?liked?Cailee Spaeny in this and totally loved what David Jonsson was doing. They both gave us performances and characters we just haven't seen in this franchise — love them both. I was also into??lvarez' video-game-speedrun take on how to make an Alien movie. Oh, and the production design was perfect. That said, I kind of want Rain and Andy to just head off into the darkness and find their non-Wayland farming planet. I want him to get her that horse. I want them to chill. I'll see the sequel if they make it, but I'd like to imagine those characters as the only two heros to really get out of the Aliens franchise in one piece. Let's just leave them alone.?
What's Anya Taylor-Joy's best role (so far)?
There's no question: over the last few years Anya Taylor-Joy's been killing it. There's?The Witch,?The Northman, Furiosa,?The Queen's Gambit,?The Menu,?Last Night in Soho,?Emma, and one of my faves, the underrated and rarely talked about?Thoroughbreds. There's a whole bunch more I'm missing, too. Pretty good for someone who's been working for just over 10 years. But in all of that, what's her best role? For me, it's a tough choice between? The Witch,?Thoroughbreds, and?The Queen's Gambit. What's it for you?
What sad coming-of-age movie has made you cry?
Coming-of-age tales can be especially heartbreaking, with protagonists learning hard lessons as they grow up and change. Tearjerkers like Lady Bird, Moonlight, and Aftersun have a reputation for being among the saddest and most profound in the genre. What are some other coming-of-age movies to check out for viewers in the mood for some tears?
What's the best Horror Western ever?
While you can't call Horror Western a crowded field, it's a bit more populated than you know and getting more populated all the time. Bone Tomahawk, The Wind,?Bacurau, and?The Pale Door?have all come out in recent years and are either great, good, or enjoyable. A lot of people are going to look at this and think of?Near Dark, and that's fine. My take is that the best Horror Western as of this moment is?Ravenous, a dirty little film by?Antonia Bird with Guy Pierce and Robert Carlyle.?It takes place a bit before the heyday of the Wild West, but it's got the right spirit along with some good pacing, a couple of manic characters, humor, terror, and a great feel. Just a nasty piece of work.?
Do you want a direct sequel to 'Prometheus'? No, I don't mean 'Covenant'
Yes, we got 'Alien: Covenant,' a story that picks up with the artificial human David some years after he sets down on a rain-filled planet. It's a decent sequel to?Prometheus, which is?better than a lot of people give it credit for — but it's not a direct?sequel. I was really looking forward to more of Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth Shaw, and, if everyone were up for it, a new entry could certainly squeeze her back into the narrative and have her and David explore more planets before they land on?Origae-6 and follow her doomed path from explorer to lab subject. A miniseries or a short movie is all we would need, and the characters of Shaw and David are strong enough that we don't really need much from the Xenomorphs. Anyone down for this? Oh, and please give me more David stories either way.
Would you watch a 'Nosferatu' sequel or prequel?
Despite being around for 104 years or so, there's never been a proper sequel to any proper?Nosferatu?film (I'm not getting into all the weird, little stuff that's been made over the years). This despite the?huge?number of versions of Dracula.?Now that it's a qualified hit at the box office after establishing a strong world and vision, you sort of have to wonder if it would be possible to make a sequel, prequel, or any kind of spin off from the 2024 version by Robert Eggers. Do I think it would happen? Probably not. Doesn't seem like Eggers' style. Do I think it would be a "good" idea? Not really. Narratively, a prequel is certainly possible, but?Nosferatu?said what it was going to say. It doesn't need to do more. Would I watch a Robert Eggers-directed,?Bill Skarsg?rd-starring second movie if it happened to come out. Yes, 100%
Anyone else obsessed with the ‘Better Man’ soundtrack as much as I am?
From the score to the songs Robbie Williams remastered, the soundtrack for Better Man is just brilliant. Of course, Michael Gracey’s film is?one of the most creative and inventive biopics in recent memory, but the music takes it to another level.?Having been blessed to grow up with Williams’ music from his?Take That?days to his solo career, I can’t help but appreciate how the songs take on new meanings amid the film’s context. The way each scene juxtaposes the performer’s past and present through the music opens up layers of emotional depth that amplify its meaning. For me, one of the standout tracks was?“Feel”. It's a song that’s always had a lot of personal weight for me, but in this movie, it’s become something entirely different. The scene when the younger Robbie sings it — it’s simply, wow. It beautifully breaks down his vulnerability as a child and his struggles with feeling understood. But then when you hear the adult Robbie, you realize how much growth and pain he’s gone throu
What movie are you most excited to see at Sundance this year?
Sundance 2025 is just a few days away, and this year's lineup looks truly phenomenal. With films featuring actors like Olivia Colman, Josh O'Connor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ayo Edebiri, Chlo? Sevigny, Rose Byrne, and many more, it's sure to be a star-studded time. Some of the films I'm most excited to see include?Andrew Ahn's The Wedding Banquet, starring?Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang, and?Katarina Zhu's Bunnylovr,?whose supporting cast includes Rachel Sennott. On the documentary side, Speak, Middletown, and?Mr. Nobody Against Putin piqued my interest. What films are you most looking forward to at the festival this year?
After his 'Deadpool & Wolverine' cameo, who should Henry Cavill play in the MCU?
Henry Cavill seems down to move on from all the DC stuff and Warner Bros. seems?very?down to never work with him again. He's got a lot of things brewing, but we all know that — if he's into it — he would put it all on hold for the right MCU role. So, what's it gonna be? A second go as?Cavillrine? Could be cool, but I think he'd be good elsewhere, too. Cyclops, the?real?Doctor Doom (don't tell me they're gonna use Robert Downey Jr. the whole time), a new Magneto, Mr. Sinister, Mephisto, Ghost Rider — there's a lot of ways this could go here. Got any more? ?
Is Chris Pratt's career cooked?
Chris Pratt has some movies on the way,?The Electric State?and?Mercy, but are you really all that interested in them? Sure, there's bound to be more Mario and?maybe?sequels to Garfield,?The Tomorrow War, and a return to the MCU — but, yeah, you've got to wonder if, between all these various missteps and his almost inescapable presence a few years ago, if Chris Pratt is kind of cooked as a major star for now. Like, is anyone?dying?to see his next movie? I don't know that they are. Is this guy's time as a big, movie-opening star over, or is he just in hibernation?
What's your pick for the greatest fantasy book series ever?
Look, obviously we've still got George R.R. Martin's unfinished?A Song of Ice and Fire?series out there hanging over our heads. Elsewhere, there's the Pern books (if you consider that Fantasy), the Wheel of Time, Discworld, and a whole host of other multipart epics that are at this moment collecting dust read or unread on our shelves. For me, though, none is as well written, deep, and inspiring as the good, old, Lord of the Rings books from? The Hobbit?all the way to all the spiraling short stories, poems, and addendum J.R.R. Tolkein spun together. Yeah, it can get exhausting, but without them, we just don't have most of the Fantasy books, movies, and shows we have today.
Who's side are you on in 'The Shining' debate — Stephen King's or Stanley Kubrick's?
Stephen King has never been — and probably will never be — fully silent about his feelings towards Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Despite it being considered one of the best horror movies of all time (and one of the best adaptations of a King book of all time) he's slighted it many, many times over the years, decrying that it didn't match his vision and that Jack Nicolson's take on the lead, in particular, was all wrong. Granted, it's a pretty one-sided fight given that Kubrick is dead and probably wouldn't care all that much even if he weren't. Still, it goes on. So who do you side with, the brilliant director who made a masterful film, or the masterful horror writer who's peeved his brilliant novel didn't wind up on screen the way he intended??
Paddington Is the Best Movie Trilogy Since The Lord of the Rings
Paddington in Peru premieres this week, bringing the titular loveable character back to our screens. To the surprise of many, this beloved, marmalade-loving bear has led three movies, each one as good as the previous one. In fact, the three?Paddington?movies comprise possibly the best movie trilogy since?Peter Jackson's?The Lord of the Rings. A few other worthy contenders have come out, most notably the?Planet of the Apes?reboot trilogy and the unofficial Oslo trilogy, but?Paddington?is something else entirely. Whereas other trilogies started off good and got better with each installment, eventually reaching greatness,?Paddington?has been great since the start. Much like Jackson's first visit to Middle-earth, Paddington?is the only modern series that has been incredible from the get-go, consistently maintaining a high level of quality throughout. What do you think? What's your favorite movie trilogy?
Did Tony Stark see Aubrey Plaza's Lady Death at the end of 'Avengers: Endgame'?
Like, it would make sense, right? In?Agatha All Along, Rico — aka Death, aka Aubrey Plaza being her best self — makes it clear she comes for everyone and Tony Stark?did die at the end of?Avengers: Endgame. But does Lady Death always look like Aubrey Plaza in a green dress? Unlikely. I don't think the universal concept of morality looks the same — either in the MCU or the Marvel comics — for everyone. Aubrey Plaza isn't likely to be the spirit at the gateway between life and death for, let's say, a creature made of massive green tentacles. In the comics, she adapts somewhat, showing up in different forms. So, yeah, I think Death was there for Iron Man — but maybe not?that?version of Death.?
After 'Deadpool & Wolverine,' who do you want to be in an MCU 'Blade' movie more, Mahershala Ali or Wesley Snipes?
So, in?theory, the MCU?Blade?movie with?Mahershala Ali is?still?coming, though with a carousel of incoming and departing directors and several rewrites, it's officially in development hell and years behind schedule. In the middle of all this, we got?Wesley Snipes doing a pretty solid job reprising his role as the vampire hunter in?Deadpool & Wolverine?last year. Even though we were all excited to see Ali as Blade when it was first announced — honestly, great casting — after all the delays, who would you want to see take on the role in an MCU movie now: Ali or Snipes?
Should Fast & Furious 11 bring back Paul Walker for a cameo?
The Fast & Furious franchise is speeding towards its finale and that kind of begs the question: Should the family bring back Paul Walker's Brian, even for a moment or two??We've already seen that something like this is possible at the end of?Furious 7. As well,?his brother, who helped out with the completion of?Furious 7?after Walker died in 2013,?has made himself available for more assistance even as CGI has taken massive leaps forward in the last 10 years. Personally, I understand that the whole issue is a bit ghoulish and may be seen as disrespecting Walker's memory. Still, if friends and family were on board for a cameo, I would be, too, if it were handled tactfully. Thing is, we already got exactly the goodbye we wanted at the end of?Furious 7.?While there are a lot of issues with bringing Brian back, my main one is that?Furious 7?did it so well, we just don't need it.?
Why isn't Sophia Lillis as big as Millie Bobby Brown or Jenna Ortega?
A few years ago, you might have guessed that Sophia Lillis would be raking in the bucks, big roles, and huge public attention that, say, Millie Bobby Brown or Jenna Ortega are now. There was?IT?and the $702 million it made. There were?Sharp Objects, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, the?unfairly cancelled I Am Not Okay With? This,?the small but effective?Gretel and Hansel?from Oz Perkins, and?more. There was her talent, her obvious pluck, and so many other things going for her. And, yet, here we are with only a solid role in?Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Theives?and?Adults?to show for it. Why isn't this obviously amazing actor getting the same success?
How in the hell is Batman alive at the end of 'The Dark Knight Rises'?
Spoilers for a 13-year-old film: At the end of?The Dark Knight Rises, we see Batman — Christian Bale — fly off into Gotham harbor in The BAT with a nuclear weapon in tow. He saves the city from the explosion but, seemingly to all on the ground, dies in the effort. Soon after, a grieving Alfred is seen at what he previously said was his favorite café in Florence and, echoing the dream he talked about earlier in the film, sees Bruce Wayne with Selina Kyle, apparently alive and well. They nod and, again per Alfred's dream, don't say a word to each other.? Now, some have stated that this scene is a continuation of Alfred's fantasy and that Batman truly is dead. But not so fast. When Lucius Fox first introduces Bruce to The BAT flying vehicle, he states that the team was never smart enough to get the autopilot to work. Bruce smiles to himself. In the aftermath of Batman's apparent death, Lucius discovers that, indeed, someone has been tampering and experimenting with the autopilot system.
